Dearest Uncle Gab, We wish you 'adieu' until we meet again. You were a wonderful and truly unique Uncle. Etched indelibly into my memory was your visit to our house in 1972, when you used to take us for walks around UNN. We'd go daily to listen to you play the organ in Christ Church chapel and then one day on the way back to our house, you challenged us to a race home and I clearly remember looking curiously and pityingly at you in your impeccable grey suit, matching tie, starched white shirt and glistening lace up shoes as we asked you in our own little way if you thought that was wise, as we weren't too sure how badly you'd take defeat! You were an Uncle after all and we were very respectful children etc etc and certainly wouldn't have wanted to do anything to upset you.....that might if anything have earned us a stroke or two of 'Dr Do Good' at home from 'JOC'! Anyway you said 'not a problem' and I remember exchanging resigned glances with Ada and Okechuku as we accepted the challenge and then wonder of wonders, you gave us a head start! Now, what happened next defined your difference and remains with me till today, as there we were at full pelt, clearly heading to an easy and much deserved victory when you flashed past us effortlessly at blinding speed to that easy victory I was as sure as a 7 year old could be was ours for the taking! We tried a few more times just to be sure you hadn't fluked it but with same results, and your place in the Hall of Fame and Total Respect from that moment onwards, was sealed in our minds as the most unique Uncle we had. So much more followed including teaching Ikenna and I in 1980 how to service a car, set the valves, reset the contacts, etc which came in quite handy years later when I bought a dodgy old motor bike! Saving Ikenna and I in the nick of time (in 1980) from 'ourselves' when we took it upon us to paint the inside of the large near enclosed water tank in your Nanka house with gallons of toxic oil paint! How you taught yourself to use a Computer in the 1990s and then became so thoroughly proficient in it that you wrote your world acclaimed book completely in it......that was pure inspiration for me. There is so much more to say Uncle Gab as you were a great man, a world renown Professor, a wonderful Uncle and an English Gentleman, and we spent so many happy years in our youth with you and your family which we'll never forget. You will always have a very special place in our hearts.....so till we meet again Uncle Gab, we say 'Adieu'. Much love from us all Obasi Ezeilo & family
